Top 3 Music Lesson Tips for Adults

Hi there Rhythm Maker!

Are you excited to begin your journey learning music, but you are wondering if it is too late to begin? Do not worry! Whether you are 5 years old or 95, it honestly is never too late to start. If it is something that you want to do, then please, go for it! Below are some tips to help you navigate this new, magical world :)

  • Choosing your instrument

When deciding to learn music, being able to pick the instrument that you want to learn is crucial. If you are learning an instrument that you dislike, your interest can easily wane. With an additional barrier to learning, lessons can become frustrating for both you and the teacher. Remember, as you advance in proficiency, the pieces and techniques also advance. So when the going gets tough, a pleasant reminder is that you’re doing this because you love playing your instrument of choice.

  •  Embracing the word ‘yet’

Music is a language that has its own system of reading, expressing and communicating. It takes time to learn and understand it. Learning something new at any age is a difficult task. And part of learning is making mistakes as mistakes help us to grow. A gentle reminder as you’re learning is to embrace the word ‘yet’ as it helps to reframe a negative statement into positivity.

  • I am not good at this as YET, but I will be.

  • It may not make sense, as YET, but it will.

  • I don’t understand this, as YET but I will.

  • Practice regularly

The only way to get better at playing any instrument is to keep practicing! Set a time that you can stick with to dedicate to practicing. Even if it is for 5 minutes every day, a little goes a long way and you’ll see how quickly you improve and feel at ease with your instrument.

All the best on your musical journey!
